Wall Planters

Wall planters can add a striking and lovely accent to nearly any garden space, whether the wall is on the exterior or interior of a patio, porch, deck or other area. All too often, gardeners have a nice display of flowers, perhaps in containers, on the floor of an outdoor space but forget that adding vertical interest, leading the eye upwards, is also important. Because some wall planters are lovely enough to serve as accent pieces and artwork as well as containers for greenery and flowers, they can emphasize the decor and decorating style of the outdoor garden. Of course, they can be used for inside gardens, too, as long as there is at least one wall with enough space available.

One excellent reason to consider wall planter is that they can give a much more elaborate and decorative effect than basic hanging containers. There is nothing wrong with those but wall planters can be either simple or fancy enough to include fountains and even vintage or antique tiles. They also come in a variety of price ranges, making them available to nearly anyone who loves to spend time being near plants, whether in summer or all year round.

When buying wall planters, don't make the mistake of ignoring the style and ambiance of your home and decor, both outside and in. Any accents such as outside planters should blend into the rest of the decorating scheme or lend a subtle, but striking, accent that helps create the desired effect. You'll also want to consider where you can use these wall containers to maximum effect. Some are meant to go under windows, are relatively plain and are designed to showcase the plants in them.

One example of a rather plain but very well made wall planter is the Gardman Georgian Metal Basket, which costs a very reasonable $20.82. They are twenty inches long and should fit under the average window. They come lined so the buyer only has to add a soil mix and the plants. This is very convenient and practical.

In contrast, those who want the container to make an artistic statement might consider the Copper Floral Wall Planter made by Woodland Products. It is also budget friendly at $22.23 and is 12 inches high. The lovely metal and swirling scroll-work are designed to catch the eye but not distract too much from any flowers held inside.

When buying planters, start by thinking of your basic theme or style. If you want to have a cottage garden, you'll want to have wall planters which match that theme and that could be very different from a European or Spanish garden. Remember that any containers, including those which hang on walls, are likely to require frequent watering. The larger the container, the less often you may need to water it, especially if soil is designed both to hold water but allow decent drainage.

You'll also want to be careful about the weight of these wall containers. Heavy metal planters may need special hardware to make sure they remain on the wall and don't come crashing down unexpectedly, perhaps on someone's head. Many of these planters are lightweight or even made of plastic or resin. Even when dirt and plants are added, they can look very appealing.
